Contraflow and Lane Shifts
When traffic has to move out of its normal path — shifted over, or routed against the usual flow — the transition has to be unmistakable. Contraflow and lane shifts depend on clear tapers, markings, and channelization.

Why It Matters
- Shifting traffic, or running it against the normal direction, is one of the higher-risk maneuvers in a work zone; drivers only do it safely if the path reads clearly.
- Leftover or conflicting markings during a shift are a serious hazard.
When It Applies
- Where the work requires traffic to move laterally into a different path or to use a lane opposite its normal direction.
Planning Considerations
- Plan the shift with a proper taper, temporary markings for the new path, and channelizing devices; plan removal of conflicting markings.
- Taper lengths and marking details come from the applicable MUTCD based on speed — verify the values.
Field Considerations
- Build the taper to the planned length, apply temporary markings for the new path, and remove or obscure conflicting markings.
- Keep channelization continuous through the shift and, for contraflow, separate opposing directions as planned.
Inspection Considerations
- Inspectors confirm the shift is clear, the taper and markings match the plan, and no conflicting markings remain.
Common Compliance Failures
- Conflicting old and temporary markings during a shift.
- Too-short or gapped tapers at the shift.
Upstream Prevention
- Design the shift with correct taper and marking transition on the plan.
- Remove conflicting markings as part of the setup, before opening the shifted path.
