What It Looks Like
- A merging or shifting taper that is shorter than required or has large gaps between devices.
Why It Happens
- The taper was built by eye without the required length, or was shortened to fit available space.
Why It Matters
- A short or broken taper forces abrupt merges, raising crash and sideswipe risk.
How It Is Identified
- An inspection measures the taper against the length required for the posted speed in the standard and plan.
How It Is Corrected
- Rebuild the taper to the required length with continuous device spacing.
How It Can Be Prevented Upstream
- Take taper length from the standard for the speed during planning and build to it in the field.
