What It Is
An automated flagger assistance device (AFAD) is a device that displays a stop/slow signal or gate to control traffic, operated by a worker positioned away from the travel lane.
It is intended to keep the worker out of the immediate path of traffic while still controlling it, in situations where flagging is used.
How It Is Used
- In place of a flagger standing in or next to the lane, where an AFAD is permitted.
- Operated by a trained worker from a safer position.
- As part of a setup that still includes the appropriate advance warning.
Why It Matters
- Reducing how close a worker stands to moving traffic addresses a core work-zone risk.
- It can make traffic control more consistent in some repetitive situations.
Considerations & Limits
- Whether an AFAD may be used, and how, is set by the MUTCD, the agency, and the approved plan.
- An AFAD is operated by a trained worker; it does not remove the need for a competent operator.
- Advance warning and the rest of the setup still apply.
