Work Zone Data Exchange (WZDx)

What It Is

Machine-readable work-zone data is a structured digital description of a work zone — its location, extent, lane closures, timing, and changes — that software, maps, and vehicles can read.

The Work Zone Data Exchange (WZDx) is a USDOT-led specification that standardizes how this information is published, so that many different consumers can use a single, consistent feed.

A data feed describes the work zone; it does not create or control it. The physical work zone still follows the applicable standard and the approved plan.

How It Is Used

• An agency or its contractor publishes active work-zone information — including lane closures and traffic-control changes — as a WZDx feed.
• Navigation apps, mapping providers, and connected or automated vehicles consume the feed and surface the information to drivers.
• Real-time lane-closure and traffic-control information can update as the work moves through phases, so the digital picture tracks the field.

Why It Matters

• A standardized feed lets one publication reach many tools, instead of each app needing a separate arrangement.
• It reaches drivers through the apps and maps they already use, before they arrive at the work zone.
• It supports connected and automated vehicles, which rely on machine-readable data to handle a road picture the work zone has changed.

Considerations & Limits

• Data only helps if it is accurate and current; a feed that does not match the field can mislead, so the published data and the actual setup must agree.
• Publishing a feed is set by the agency's capability and policy — not every work zone is represented in a data feed.
• A data feed supplements, and does not replace, the required physical traffic control that governs every road user.
