What It Is
A queue warning system uses sensors to detect stopped or slowing traffic upstream of a work zone and then warns approaching drivers, often through dynamic signs.
It targets the risk of drivers coming upon the back of a queue unexpectedly, which is a recognized hazard near work zones.
How It Is Used
- To detect where a queue is forming as conditions change through the day.
- To trigger warning messages far enough upstream that drivers can slow in time.
- To adapt the warning as the queue grows or clears.
Why It Matters
- The back of a queue is one of the more dangerous points near a work zone, and earlier warning gives drivers more time to react.
- Because queues move, a system that responds in real time can warn more accurately than a fixed sign.
Considerations & Limits
- A queue warning system supplements the required traffic control; it does not replace it.
- Whether such a system is used, and how, is set by the agency and the approved plan.
- The system must be accurate and maintained; false or missed warnings undermine trust.
