Connected Traffic-Control Devices

A connected traffic-control device is a standard work-zone device that can also report its status or be updated remotely. This page explains the concept and how it fits with the standards — connectivity does not change what device is required or how it must be used.

What It Is

Connected or "smart" traffic-control devices are standard devices — such as arrow boards, portable changeable message signs, automated flagger assistance devices, or sensors — with communication built in so their status can be monitored and their settings shared or updated remotely.

The device itself is still a standard traffic-control device that must meet the physical device standards and be used as the applicable standard and the approved plan require.

How It Is Used

  • To monitor device status remotely — for example, whether an arrow board is on and displaying the correct pattern.
  • To update or coordinate messages across devices, so guidance stays consistent through the work zone.
  • To feed device status into work-zone data feeds or queue-warning systems, and to alert the team when a device is knocked down or malfunctioning.

Why It Matters

  • Faster detection of a device that is off, wrong, or displaced helps keep the setup matching the approved plan.
  • Coordinated, current messaging reduces conflicting or stale information approaching the work zone.
  • Device status can become part of the digital record and the field packet.

Considerations & Limits

  • Connectivity does not change what device is required, where it goes, or how it is used — that is set by the standard, the agency, and the approved plan.
  • A connected device must still meet the physical device standards; a device that reports "on" but shows the wrong information is still wrong.
  • Connected features supplement, and do not replace, the required inspection and maintenance of the devices in the field.
